The 2ha property is on the market with a $2.5 million price guide and is being marketed as an expressions of interest campaign through Ray White Byron Bay’s Michael and Martine Gudgeon.

Hamish and Kristy collaborated with Byron Bay-based interior designer Louella Boitel-Gill to thoughtfully design and renovate their home. The result is a harmonious blend of quirky cottage charm and understated treehouse aesthetics, with subtle nods to the surrounding natural environment, all while keeping comfort and practicality at the heart of the design. The home has heart, soul, and a cool factor in spades.

After four years in the home, Hamish and Kristy still remember being drawn to the potential of the home from the first moment. During the design process, the couple were eager to find a balance between creativity and day-to-day function.

“Louella brought so much creative energy to the process. Kristy and Louella were deep in the creative side - textures, colour palettes, layout flows, and I was often the one balancing that with how things would function day-to-day,” Hamish said.

“We wanted a place that felt good to live in. Somewhere to play music, entertain friends and have space for the kids to run wild. It was important to me that everything had a purpose and felt natural.

“We fell in love with the property and its sense of space and privacy at first sight. As a musician, it’s great to find a home where you can play music freely without worrying about neighbours, and this property offers that.

“Living 1.5km from the famous Clunes Store & Cellars is a huge convenience, and the proximity to the Eltham Hotel sealed the deal. The connection to nature was a huge plus as well, running along the incredibly quiet and serene Booyong Road with the dogs in the early morning is something I’ll really miss.”

Kristy had always dreamed of doing a renovation and had admired Louella Boitel-Gill’s work for years. The home gave them the perfect canvas and Kristy was excited when she discovered Louella had moved to the Northern Rivers.

“Her aesthetic immediately resonated with us - warm, eclectic, soulful. We wanted to honour the home’s original character while introducing thoughtful layers and pops of Louella’s signature greens and blues. Working with Louella was a dream, she has an incredible eye for combining vintage charm with modern functionality,” Kristy said.

“The renovation was a truly collaborative process, with pieces sourced from all over to create spaces that feel lived-in and full of story. It took us around a year to complete everything, from initial design through to the finishing touches. She pulled together a fantastic team with Bernie&Co working on the build.

“I remember joking in our early conversations that the design brief was kind of like: “What would Lenny Kravitz do with a house in Byron?”. Not literally, but something with creative spirit, texture, soul, and a relaxed kind of cool. The house is very naturally Louella’s style, and there’s also a laid-back, lived-in vibe that really reflects our family.”

The whole house was a labour of love for the couple but they both have their favourite features, from the master bedroom to the bespoke details that add heart to the home.

“The master bedroom is one of my favourite spaces, it’s east-facing, so you wake to sunrise views over the hills. On a misty morning, it’s pure magic. The bespoke details are incredibly special: vintage timber cheeseboard and French louvre wardrobes, a claw-foot bath on the balcony, and a round window in the ensuite that frames the garden beautifully,” Kristy said.

“The bunk room has been a joy, it’s doubled as a sleepover haven for the kids and a creative family space with plenty of built-in storage. The home has heart; every corner feels intentional and inviting.”

Whether it’s friends around the fire in winter or long lunches out on the deck, Hamish loves the entertaining spaces of the home.

“It’s a great house for entertaining! The layout just works for gatherings, and the open kitchen/living space flows beautifully. There’s a warmth to the house, it’s the kind of place where people immediately feel comfortable and don’t want to leave,” Hamish said.

For Hamish and Kristy, Clunes is a special place with a real sense of community and a whole lot of soul.

“Clunes has regular events at the general store, a welcoming social tennis scene, and access to some of the most beautiful hinterland in the region,” Kristy said.

“The Eltham Hotel is an iconic local hangout, and the Byron Bay hinterland is dotted with hidden waterfalls and scenic bushwalks. It’s peaceful, inspiring, and rich with charm, everything you’d want in a hinterland lifestyle.

“We’re a family that loves hiking and swimming at waterfalls and entertaining at home, so we were naturally drawn to the hinterland lifestyle.

“I grew up in Byron Bay, so living in a region I’ve always loved is meaningful. The house has plenty of room for friends and family to spend time and stay.”

With the pace of life picking up, the Rossers are now moving to something a little closer to the action. While it’s a bittersweet move for them, they’re not heading too far and are planning to relocate within the region. They also can’t wait to work with Louella again on their next project.
